EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases three distinct species of marine bulla, or small, flat, shells: Bulla resiliens, Bulla pallida, and Bulla cylindricus. The Elastic Bulla, Bulla resiliens, is depicted in the center, displaying a characteristic elongated shape and a smooth, pale surface. This species, also known as the Pale Elastic Bulla, is native to the Atlantic and North Sea, and is recognized for its remarkable ability to return to its original shape after being compressed. To the left of the central shell is the Pale Bulla, Bulla pallida. This species is easily identified by its cylindrical shape and the intricate, concentric patterns adorning its surface. The Cylindric Bulla, Bulla cylindricus, is shown on the right, featuring a more rounded shape and a less uniformly colored surface compared to the other two species. This image is taken from John Mason Good's Pantologia, a New Encyclopedia, published in London in 1813. The engraving was created under the supervision of Sydenham Edwards, a renowned naturalist and illustrator of his time. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant handcolouring make this print an invaluable contribution to the fields of conchology and zoology, providing a detailed and accurate record of these fascinating marine specimens.
