EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Elder tree, scientifically known as Sambucus nigra, a common plant in Europe, North America, and Asia. Elders are deciduous shrubs or small trees, reaching up to 15 meters in height, with large, flat-topped clusters of small white or cream-colored flowers, followed by clusters of black or blue-black berries. The Elder tree has held significant cultural and medicinal importance for centuries. In European folklore, it was believed that Elder trees were sacred and protected from harm. The tree was also considered a symbol of protection and healing, and its wood was used for making wands, charms, and other magical objects. In herbal medicine, various parts of the Elder tree have been used for medicinal purposes. The berries are rich in vitamin C, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, making them a popular remedy for colds, flu, and other respiratory ailments. The bark and leaves have been used to make a tea to treat arthritis, rheumatism, and nerve pain. This beautiful botanical illustration was created by David Blair and published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's Medicinal Plants, a comprehensive work on the medicinal properties of plants, published in London in 1880. The illustration was then hand-coloured by Hanhart, adding an extra layer of detail and beauty to the already intricate design. The Elder tree is a testament to the natural world's beauty and the rich history of medicinal plant use.
