This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts Emperor Napoleon I in his Costume Ordinaire, or campaign uniform, from the year 1804. The image captures the imperial majesty and military prowess of the French leader, as he is shown wearing the iconic bicorn hat adorned with a golden eagle and the distinctive tricolor cockade. The double-breasted coat, with its lapels turned back and fastened by golden buttons, is embroidered with the Napoleonic bees and the legend "Napoleon, Empereur des Français" (Napoleon, Emperor of the French). The cuffs of the coat are adorned with golden epaulettes, and the sash across the chest bears the insignia of the Legion of Honor. Napoleon's military campaigns had made him a legendary figure, and his uniforms were symbols of his power and status. This Costume Ordinaire was designed for use during military campaigns, and it reflects the practicality and functionality required for battle. The uniform's dark color and simple design allowed it to blend in with the surroundings, making the wearer less visible to the enemy.
