Daughter of a Spanish duke and a Mexican creole mother, Eugenia rose to become the wife of Napoleon III in 1853, a union that solidified his power and brought her immense influence. However, after the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, Eugenia and Napoleon were forced to flee the country.
