EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases Etienne Marin Melingue in the role of Berthold from the play "Les Orphelines de Danvers" (The Orphans of Danvers) at the Théâtre de l'Ambigu-Comique in Paris during the 1840s. The production was based on the popular novel by Victor Hugo and was illustrated by Alexandre Lacauchie for Victor Dollet's Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Théâtres de Paris. Etienne Marin Melingue (1811-1888) was a renowned French actor who began his career in the 1830s and quickly rose to prominence for his versatile performances. In this image, Melingue embodies the character of Berthold, a nobleman who falls in love with the orphaned heroine, Henriette. The lithograph captures the intensity and passion of Berthold's character, with his piercing gaze and dramatic pose. The intricate details of Melingue's stage costume are beautifully rendered in the lithograph, from the rich velvet fabric and elaborate embroidery to the ornate buttons and cuffs. The high collar and voluminous sleeves were typical of the fashionable attire worn by noblemen during the 1840s. The use of handcolouring adds depth and texture to the image, making it a stunning example of the theatrical art of the time. The Théâtre de l'Ambigu-Comique was a popular venue for French theatre during the 19th century, and this production of "Les Orphelines de Danvers" was undoubtedly a highlight of the season. Melingue's portrayal of Berthold was undoubtedly a critical and audience success, and this lithograph serves as a testament to his talent and the enduring appeal of the play.
