EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard depicts Etienne de Vignoles, better known as La Hire, a renowned French military commander during the Hundred Years War. Born in 1390, La Hire rose to prominence under King Charles VII and played a significant role in several key battles against the English. La Hire is shown here in full military regalia, astride a galloping horse. He wears a richly decorated tunic, likely made of wool or linen, with a high-neckline and long, flowing sleeves. Over this, he dons a suit of armour, consisting of a coat and helm or casque. The coat, also known as a gorget, covers his chest and shoulders, while the helm protects his head and neck. La Hire's arms are adorned with bracers, and he holds a lance in his right hand, while his left hand rests on the reins. His boots are fitted with spurs, indicating his readiness for battle. The intricate details of his armour and the vibrant colours of his tunic are beautifully rendered in this handcoloured lithograph. This image is taken from the manuscript Chroniques de Monstrelet in Roger de Gaignieres portfolio VI 50, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob under the title Costumes Historiques de la France in 1852. The meticulous attention to detail in this print provides a fascinating glimpse into the appearance of a French military commander during the late Middle Ages.
