1. Title: Eugene Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg: The Son of Empress Joséphine and Napoleon Bonaparte's First Marriage This handcoloured lithograph, taken from Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France" (Historical Costumes of France), published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852, showcases the striking likeness of Eugène de Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg. Born in 1781, Eugène was the eldest son of Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, who was the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. The image portrays Eugène in the regal attire of a duke, donning a richly textured and embroidered robe, adorned with gold braid and buttons. His chest is bedecked with numerous orders and decorations, reflecting his noble status and military achievements. The Duke's expression exudes confidence and maturity, emphasizing his significant role in European politics during the early 19th century. Eugène's parents' marriage took place in 1809, following Joséphine's divorce from Napoleon and her subsequent remarriage to the Bavarian prince, Eugène de Beauharnais. This union was a strategic move to strengthen diplomatic relations between France and Bavaria. As a result, Eugène was granted the title of Duke of Leuchtenberg and was made the Viceroy of Italy. The handcoloured lithograph is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the European aristocracy during the Napoleonic era. The intricate details and vibrant colours bring the image to life, transporting us back in time to an era of elegance, power, and intrigue. This piece of historical art serves as a reminder of the fascinating lives and legacies of the influential figures who shaped Europe's history.
