This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print depicts the European pilchard, Sardina pilchardus, also known as the pilchard or the Atlantic herring, a small, silver-colored fish that is a common inhabitant of the European waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The European pilchard is a member of the Clupeidae family, which is the largest family of fish in the world, and is characterized by its elongated, streamlined body and a single dorsal fin.
