EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the European Wand Loosestrife, Lythrum virgatum, a beautiful and historically significant plant native to Europe. The intricately detailed illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The European Wand Loosestrife is a herbaceous perennial plant that grows up to 1 meter tall and is characterized by its long, slender stems and clusters of small, pink or purple flowers. The plant is also known by various other names, including Josephina, Imperatricis, Josephine's Crown, Gioseffina, and Coronata, reflecting its ornamental value and historical significance. The plant's edible fruits, which are small and round, were once used in the preparation of jams and jellies, and the plant was also used in traditional medicine for various ailments. The European Wand Loosestrife is still commonly found in wetlands and along the edges of ponds and streams throughout Europe. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration provides a glimpse into the rich history of botany and the importance of botanical illustration in documenting and preserving the natural world. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the image, making it a true work of art.
