EDITORS COMMENTS
Evening Primrose, Oenothera fruticosa subsp. glauca, also known as Glaucous Oenothera or Oenothera glauca, is a beautiful and intriguing flowering plant that has captivated botanists and artists for centuries. This stunning hand-coloured copperplate engraving, created by S. Watts after an illustration by Miss Sarah Drake for the Botanical Register published by Sydenham Edwards in Ridgeway, London, in 1832, showcases the plant's unique features in exquisite detail. The Evening Primrose is a herbaceous perennial that grows up to 60 cm tall and is native to North America. It is characterized by its distinctive, large, yellow flowers that bloom in the evening and emit a sweet fragrance. The plant's leaves are lanceolate, and its stems are covered in small, star-shaped hairs, giving them a glaucous or bluish appearance, hence the subspecies name. The botanical illustration and engraving process was a laborious one, requiring great skill and patience. The artist, Miss Sarah Drake, carefully observed and sketched the plant, while the engraver, S. Watts, used copperplate etching techniques to transfer the image onto a copper plate. The plate was then hand-coloured, adding depth and vibrancy to the final print. This beautiful and intricate engraving is a testament to the artistry and dedication of the botanical illustrators and engravers of the 19th century. It not only serves as a record of the plant's appearance but also as a work of art that can be appreciated for its aesthetic value. Today, the Evening Primrose remains a popular plant in gardens and is known for its medicinal properties, particularly its rich content of gamma-linolenic acid, which is used to treat various health conditions.
