EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases an intriguing assemblage of exotic insects. At the center, two species of antlions, Palpares libelluloides and Euptilon ornatum, are depicted. Antlions, also known as dobsonflies, are large, predatory insects with distinctive elongated bodies and lacewing-like wings. The first species, Palpares libelluloides, is characterized by its slender body and long, pointed abdomen, while Euptilon ornatum boasts a more robust build and ornate markings on its thorax. Surrounding the antlions, a fishfly (Chauliodes pectinicornis) can be seen. Fishflies are large, dragonfly-like insects that are often found near water. They have long, slender legs and large, membranous wings. The third antlion species, Vella americana, is depicted in the lower left corner of the image. This antlion is easily identified by its large, fan-like wings and distinctive, lacy wing covers. The final species in this composition is another fishfly, represented by the specimen in the upper right corner. Fishflies are important prey items for many aquatic organisms, and their large size and distinctive appearance make them a fascinating subject for natural history illustrations. This exquisite handcoloured lithograph is a testament to the remarkable diversity of the insect world during the 19th century. The meticulous attention to detail and vibrant colours bring these exotic species to life, offering a glimpse into the natural history of a bygone era.
