EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving, titled "Fruit, fruits à pépins et fruits en baie: Figues, Mespilus, et Cydonie," is a beautiful representation of figs (Ficus carica), medlar (Mespilus germanica), and quince (Cydonia oblonga). The intricate illustration, created by Edouard Maubert and expertly engraved by Lebrun, was published as part of the comprehensive horticultural work "La Regne Vegetal: Horticulture: Jardin Potager et Jardin Fruitier" by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The illustration showcases three distinct fruits, each with its unique characteristics. Figs, with their elongated, fleshy fruits encased in a green or purple exterior, are depicted in the foreground, with two specimens displayed. The medlar, or open-centered fruit, is illustrated in the middle, its brown, wrinkled exterior giving way to a sweet, edible pulp once it has been "bletted," or allowed to soften after being exposed to frost. In the background, quince fruits hang from the tree, their golden-yellow hue and distinctive, round shape adding a delightful contrast to the other fruits. This stunning engraving not only serves as a testament to the artists' mastery of botanical illustration but also offers a glimpse into the rich horticultural knowledge of the late 19th century. It is a captivating reminder of the beauty and diversity of nature, inviting us to appreciate the intricacies of these fascinating fruits.
