EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts the legendary figure of St. George slaying a dragon, as portrayed in the Dijon Altarpiece by Jacques de Baerze. The saint, dressed in the attire of a French knight from the 14th century, wears a jupon with coat of arms, shield, and bouche, a bascinet helmet, a belt, and wields a sword. The intricate details of his armor and the heraldry on his shield reflect the chivalric spirit of the time. The scene unfolds in an archway, reminiscent of a church or cathedral, with St. George's horse rearing back in the midst of the battle. The dragon, with its menacing presence and fiery breath, is about to attack the saint, but St. George remains steadfast, ready to defend the townspeople. The figures of John Holzhausen, the mayor or burgermeister, and his wife, Guda, Goldstein, Gudela, are also present in the background, paying homage to the saint and offering prayers. The grave effigy of St. John the Evangelist can be seen in the foreground, adding a sense of reverence and spiritual significance to the scene. This illustration, created by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck and lithographed by C.R., is a testament to the rich art and cultural history of the Middle Ages. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the chromolithograph transport us back to an era of knights, heraldry, and faith.
