EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "Figures representing Aztec kings of Mexico," is an intriguing glimpse into the rich and complex history of the ancient Aztec civilization. Created by Verico for Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy, in 1843, this illustration showcases four Aztec kings in their traditional regalia. The first figure, wearing a tall, conical hat adorned with feathers and a knee-length tunic, is identified as Moctezuma II, the last Aztec emperor before the Spanish conquest. He holds a staff topped with a hawk's head, a symbol of his power and authority. The second figure, wearing a similar hat but with a more elaborate headdress, is believed to represent Ahuizotl, an Aztec ruler known for his military prowess. His tunic is adorned with the image of a dragon, a common Aztec motif representing power and strength. The third figure, wearing a simple crown and a tunic adorned with a rat, is identified as Tlacael, an Aztec king who ruled during the late 15th century. The rat symbol on his tunic represents Xipe Totec, the Aztec god of fertility and renewal. The fourth figure, wearing a tall, feathered headdress and a tunic adorned with quetzal feathers, is identified as Moctezuma I, an Aztec ruler who reigned during the early 15th century. His headdress is adorned with the image of a serpent, a symbol of his divine connection to the earth. This stunning illustration offers a unique and captivating glimpse into the rich symbolism and regal traditions of the ancient Aztec civilization, providing a valuable record of a culture that continues to fascinate and inspire us today.
