EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Hyder Ali, the valiant ruler of Mysore in Southern India, in a moment of retreat after the decisive Battle of Porto Novo, fought on July 1, 1781, during the Second Anglo-Mysore War (1780-1784). The battle, now known as Parangipettai, took place between the British East India Company, led by General James Grant, and the Sultanate of Mysore. Hyder Ali, dressed in an ornate turban and robe, is shown galloping away on horseback, with a group of horsemen following in his wake. The scene captures the intensity and chaos of the battlefield, with smoke rising from the distant battlefield and the sound of clashing swords and gunfire still echoing in the air. The Battle of Porto Novo was a significant turning point in the Second Anglo-Mysore War, which saw the British gain control over much of the southern Indian region. Hyder Ali's defeat marked the end of his military career, and he died just a few months later, on December 24, 1782. This evocative print, created in the late 18th century, offers a glimpse into the rich history and complex political landscape of Southern India during this period. It is a testament to the bravery and strategic prowess of Hyder Ali and the enduring impact of the Anglo-Mysore Wars on the subcontinent.
