EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Forkbeard and Fivebeard Rockling," is a captivating illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator, Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). The illustration features two species of rockling fish, the Forkbeard (Phycis phycis) and the Fivebeard Rockling (Ciliata mustela). Both fish are depicted in intricate detail, with their distinct features accentuated through the meticulous stipple engraving technique. The Forkbeard, also known as the European Spitfish or Sphyraena phycis, is shown on the left side of the image, with its long, slender body and distinctive forked lower jaw. The Fivebeard Rockling, also known as the European Barracuda or Sphyraena sp., is depicted on the right, with its five barbels or "beards" located beneath its lower jaw. The illustration also includes several other marine species, including the European Perch (Perca fluviatilis), the European Barracuda or European Perse (Sphyraena sp.), and the European Merluazzo or European Barracouta (Merluzzo barbuto). These additional species add to the overall richness and diversity of the image, showcasing the impressive natural history knowledge of the time. Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, and his direction of this illustration is evident in the precise detail and accurate representation of each species. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history illustration.
