EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's renowned "Book of the World" published in Stuttgart in 1849, showcases an intriguing assemblage of ancient fossils. The image includes various extinct sea urchins, each with unique characteristics that distinguish them from their modern counterparts. Among these are the Cidarites species: Cidarites maximus (1), Cidarites coronatus (2), Cidarites subangularis (3), and Cidarites nobilis (4). The sea urchins Cidarites belong to the Cidaroida order, which is characterized by their large, flat, and strongly ribbed test or shell. Two other sea urchin species are also depicted in this illustration: Spatangus retusus (6) and Nucleolites scutatus (7). Spatangus retusus, also known as the heart urchin, is identified by its heart-shaped test and numerous tube feet. Nucleolites scutatus, on the other hand, is recognized by its rounded, shield-like test and short, blunt spines. The fossil display also includes a Megalosaurus tooth (8) and teeth from an extinct fish, Gyrodus (9). The Megalosaurus, a large theropod dinosaur, roamed the Earth during the Middle Jurassic period. Its serrated teeth were well-suited for seizing and tearing apart the flesh of its prey. The Gyrodus, an extinct fish, is represented by its toothy remains, which share similarities with those of modern-day sharks. This stunning lithograph, with its meticulous attention to detail and vibrant color palette, offers a glimpse into the diverse and fascinating world of ancient marine life and the prehistoric creatures that once inhabited our planet.
