EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Fossils of Extinct Sea Snails," is an exquisite illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was produced under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The illustration showcases several extinct species of sea snails, including Proto maraschinii, Turritella, Potamides fragilis, and Nerina tuberculosa. Each snail is intricately detailed, revealing their unique textures and structures. Some of these extinct mollusks are described as having hairy or bristly shells, such as the Hairy Crab (Proto del Maraschiini) and the Bristly Pilumnus (Hirtellus). Others are light blue and soldier-like, like the Mictyris, while some have long, curved shells, such as the Longicarpus. The illustration also includes other extinct marine life, such as the Pea Crab (Pinnotheres pisum), the Pilunno, the Irto, and the Longicarpo Pinnotere. Each species is meticulously drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Corsi, resulting in a stunning visual representation of these extinct marine organisms. The use of the copperplate stipple engraving technique adds depth and texture to the illustration, making each fossil appear lifelike and intriguing. This historical piece not only showcases the beauty of these extinct sea snails but also highlights the remarkable skill and artistry of the illustrators and engravers of the time.
