EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Four-o-clock, or Umbrellawort, Mirabilis viscosa, a beautiful and intriguing plant native to Central and South America. The common name "Four-o-clock" refers to the unique opening pattern of its flowers, which only bloom in the late afternoon and evening, giving the appearance that they open at four o'clock. The plant is also known by various other names, including Calixhymenia viscosa, Oxybaphus viscosus, and Ossibafo vischioso. The Four-o-clock belongs to the Mirabilis family, which also includes the common Miralis jalapa, or Marigold, and the edible vegetable, Angustifolia, or Russian Olive. This exquisite illustration was created by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840) for the Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the stipple engraving technique. The illustration shows the various parts of the plant, including its silvery leaves, stems adorned with small, silver berries, and the distinctive umbrella-shaped flowers. The Four-o-clock was often used in traditional medicine for various ailments, and its edible silver-colored berries were consumed for their nutritional value. This image is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the skill of the botanical illustrators of the past. It invites us to appreciate the intricacies of the Four-o-clock and the important role that such illustrations play in documenting and preserving the natural world for future generations.
