EDITORS COMMENTS
Francis I, Duke of Brittany, also known as Francis, le Bien-Aime, or the Beloved, was born in 1414 as the eldest son of John V, Duke of Brittany, and Joan of Navarre. This handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard, based on a figure in Roger de Gaignières portfolio VI 36 from Le Bibliophile Jacob's Costumes Historiques de la France, offers a striking portrayal of Francis in his regal attire. Francis' reign as Duke of Brittany, which began in 1433 following his father's death, was marked by political instability and conflicts with neighboring powers, including France and England. However, he was also a patron of the arts and a significant player in European politics. In this image, Francis is depicted wearing the traditional costume of a medieval duke. He is shown wearing a long, flowing tunic, girded with a broad belt, and a mantle draped over his shoulders. The tunic is adorned with intricate embroidery and rich fabrics, reflecting the wealth and status of the Duke. The mantle, meanwhile, is lined with fur, adding an extra layer of warmth and luxury. Francis' head is crowned with a tall, conical hat, a common headgear for medieval nobility. Despite the political challenges he faced during his reign, Francis I, le Bien-Aime, is remembered for his love of justice and his efforts to maintain peace in Brittany. He died in 1450, leaving behind a complex political legacy that would shape the region for centuries to come.
