EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handfinished chromolithograph depicts a delightful arrangement of five beautiful flowering plants: Narrow-leaved Fraxinella (Dictammus angustifolia), Sweet-scented Rue (Aplophyllum suaveolens), Honey Flower or Melianthus Major, and two varieties of Honey Flower, Rue and Fraxinella. The illustration is based on an original work by Jane Loudon, created for her book "Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849 by William S. Orr. Henry Noel Humphreys expertly rendered this print using the chromolithograph process, which allowed for vibrant colors and intricate detail. The Narrow-leaved Fraxinella, with its delicate pink flowers and slender leaves, is nestled among the Sweet-scented Rue, characterized by its blue-green foliage and white flowers with a strong fragrance. The larger Honey Flower, Melianthus Major, adds a dramatic touch with its large, tubular, red and yellow blooms. The two varieties of Honey Flower, Rue and Fraxinella, are artfully intertwined, showcasing their unique differences. The Rue, Aplophyllum suaveolens, boasts small, yellow flowers and feathery leaves, while the Fraxinella, Dictammus angustifolia, displays pinkish-purple flowers and narrow leaves. This exquisite print not only serves as a testament to the artistic skill of the time but also highlights the charm and diversity of these ornamental perennials. It is a captivating addition to any botanical collection or garden-themed decor.
