The botanical illustration was created by David Blair and later lithographed by Hanhart for inclusion in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's comprehensive work, "Medicinal Plants," published in London in 1880. Gambier is a woody vine native to Southeast Asia, particularly in the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. The plant is renowned for its medicinal properties, which have been utilized in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. The primary active components of Gambier are tannins, specifically the catechins gambirin and gambogic acid.
