EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, an influential figure in both the American and French Revolutions. Born in France in 1757, Lafayette was an aristocrat and officer who gained fame for his military leadership and commitment to the cause of liberty. In 1777, he joined the Continental Army during the American Revolution, becoming a major general and a close ally of George Washington. After the war, he returned to France, where he became a key figure in the early stages of the French Revolution. The image shows Lafayette in the uniform of a French officer from 1789, the year of the storming of the Bastille and the beginning of the Revolution. The richly detailed costume, with its red coat, gold braid, and tricorn hat, reflects the opulence of the Ancien Régime, even as the forces of revolution were beginning to challenge its power. Lafayette's pose, with one hand on his sword and the other raised in a gesture of defiance, underscores his role as a champion of liberty and a symbol of the changing times. This lithograph is from Le Bibliophile Jacob, a collection of historical costumes of France published in Paris in 1852 by Paul Lacroix. The meticulously handcoloured images offer a vivid and accurate record of the fashions and styles of the past, making them an invaluable resource for historians, costume designers, and anyone interested in the history of dress and fashion.
