EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Globe Daisy, Globularia salicina, also known as Globularia longifolia or Globulaire à longues feuilles. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Globe Daisy is a small, mat-forming, succulent plant, native to the Mediterranean region. Its attractive, globular, blue-green leaves are covered in small, star-shaped, white or pink flowers, giving it the appearance of a daisy. The plant is also known for its edible fruits, which are spherical and resemble small grapes. The engraving also features other related plants, including Selaginella, Jungermannioides, a fern, Lycopodium, and Lycopodio, with their respective leaves and di Jungermannia. The intricate detail and vibrant colours of the illustration showcase Turpin's exceptional skill as a botanical artist. The use of copperplate stipple engraving, a technique that involves using a sharp tool to create small dots on a copper plate, adds texture and depth to the image. This beautiful and historical illustration provides a glimpse into the rich botanical knowledge of the 19th century and the importance of accurate and detailed documentation of plant species. It is a testament to the dedication and expertise of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu and Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin in the field of botany.
