EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by Pedretti after an illustration by A. Carie Baron for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases three distinct and intriguing creatures from the natural world: a Golden Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), an Alpine Marmot (Marmota marmota), and a Ferret or Polecat (Mustela putorius). The Golden Lion Tamarin, an endangered primate native to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, is depicted perched on a branch, its golden fur shimmering in the light. With its expressive face and agile body, this small monkey is a striking contrast to the harsh, rocky terrain of its habitat. The Alpine Marmot, a burrowing rodent, is shown in its cozy den, surrounded by the soft, inviting grasses of its alpine meadow home. With its plump body and bushy tail, this marmot is well-adapted to its cold, high-altitude environment. The Ferret or Polecat, a member of the weasel family, is shown in the lower right corner of the image, its sleek, ferrety body coiled in a defensive posture. With its pointed snout and slender limbs, this elusive creature is a skilled predator, able to navigate both above and below ground to hunt its prey. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving not only captures the essence of these fascinating creatures but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the past. The vibrant colors and meticulous shading bring the image to life, making it a true work of art.
