EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate print showcases the majestic Greater Adjutant, Leptoptilos dubius, a critically endangered species of large wading bird. Native to South Asia, the Greater Adjutant is the largest flying crane in the world, with a wingspan reaching up to 1.5 meters. The bird is depicted here in its full regalia, with its distinctive black and white plumage, long neck, and a prominent red gular pouch under its beak. The Greater Adjutant was once abundant in wetlands and rice paddies, but due to habitat loss, hunting, and poisoning, its population has drastically declined. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), there are only around 2,500 mature individuals left in the wild. This beautiful print is a work of art from John Latham's "A General History of Birds," published in Winchester, England, in 1824. Latham, a renowned ornithologist, drew and engraved the image himself, showcasing his exceptional skills in both disciplines. The intricate details of the bird's feathers, beak, and eyes are captured with remarkable precision, making this print a valuable addition to any ornithological collection. The Greater Adjutant's endangered status serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving biodiversity and protecting the habitats of threatened species. This magnificent bird, with its unique appearance and significant role in the ecosystem, deserves our attention and care. Let us hope that conservation efforts will help secure a future for this magnificent creature and ensure that future generations can marvel at its beauty.
