EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Green Frog, Pelophylax kl. esculentus, also known as the European Green Frog or Edible Frog. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The engraving was created under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century. Turpin's exceptional talent and meticulous attention to detail are evident in this stunning representation of the Green Frog. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Corsi. The Green Frog is native to Europe and Western Asia and can be found in a variety of habitats, including scrublands, marshes, and forests near water. This amphibian is characterized by its bright green coloration, which provides excellent camouflage among vegetation. The Green Frog is an omnivore, feeding on a diet that includes insects, snails, and even small vertebrates. The history of the Green Frog goes back to ancient times, with records of its consumption for food and medicinal purposes. The frog's legs were considered a delicacy in Europe, and it was often served in high-end restaurants. The Green Frog was also used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, including gout and rheumatism. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the rich history of botany and natural science in Europe during the 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the Green Frog to life, making it a true work of art.
