EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the endangered Green Sea Turtle, Chelonia mydas, as illustrated in Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The engraving was created under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Stanghi. The Green Sea Turtle is one of the largest and most widely distributed of all sea turtles. They are named for the greenish coloration of their fat, which is rich in vitamin A. This turtle is critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and incidental capture in fishing gear. The image shows a Green Sea Turtle with a distinctive pattern of scales on its face, which earned it the common name "spectacled" turtle. In the background, we see a Spectacled Caiman, Crocodylus tigirus, and an American Crocodile, Crocodylus acutus, both of which are also depicted in their natural habitats. The hatching Green Sea Turtle emerging from an egg is a symbol of hope and a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures and their habitats. Turpin was a master of his craft, and this illustration is a testament to the beauty and intricacy of his work. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning addition to any collection of natural history prints.
