EDITORS COMMENTS
Greenheart, Chlorocardium rodiei, also known by its synonyms Nectandra rodioei, Cogwood, Demerara Ispingo, Moena, Sipiri, Bebeeru, Bibiru, is a remarkable tropical hardwood tree native to South America, specifically in the Amazon Basin and the Guianas. This stunning handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, after a botanical illustration by David Blair, was published as part of Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" in London, 1880. The Greenheart tree is renowned for its exceptional durability and resistance to decay, making it highly sought-after for various applications, including shipbuilding, construction, and even the manufacture of high-quality musical instruments. Its heartwood is a rich, dark green color, which gives the tree its name. The Greenheart tree can grow up to 30 meters tall and has a straight trunk with a smooth, gray bark. Its leaves are evergreen, simple, and alternate, with a length of 10-20 cm and a width of 5-10 cm. The tree produces small, white flowers in panicles, followed by round, red fruits. The medicinal properties of Greenheart have been known for centuries. Indigenous peoples of the Amazon have used various parts of the tree for treating various ailments, including fever, dysentery, and skin conditions. The bark is particularly rich in tannins, which have astringent and antimicrobial properties. This exquisite lithograph not only serves as a testament to the beauty of the Greenheart tree but also highlights its historical significance in botanical illustration and the study of medicinal plants.
