EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Guelder-rose, Viburnum opulus, red scabious, Scabiosa peregrina, mountain scabious, Pterocephalus dumetorum, devils bit, Succisa pratensis, thistle protea, Protea scolymocephala," is a stunning example of botanical illustration from the 18th century. Originally published in Professor Filippo Arenas' seminal work, "La natura e cultura dei fiori fisicamente esposta" (The nature and culture of flowers physically displayed), this illustration was produced in Palermo, Italy, in 1771. The engraving showcases an intricate arrangement of eight different flowering plants, each labeled with its corresponding botanical name. The central focus is the Guelder rose, or European cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus), with its clusters of white flowers and red berries. Surrounding it are various species of scabious (Scabiosa peregrina and Succisa pratensis), characterized by their distinctive bell-shaped flowers and hairy stems. The mountain scabious (Pterocephalus dumetorum) is depicted in the upper left corner, with its blue-purple flowers and fuzzy leaves. The thistle protea (Protea scolymocephala) takes center stage in the lower right corner, its vibrant yellow and red blooms contrasting beautifully with the surrounding greenery. Accompanying it are the red scabious (Scabiosa peregrina) and the devil's bit (Succisa pratensis), both adding a pop of color and texture to the composition. This engraving not only serves as a testament to the artistic skill and botanical knowledge of the time but also provides a captivating glimpse into the world of 18th-century botanical exploration and documentation.
