EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts the pivotal moment in English history when Guy Fawkes, the notorious leader of the Gunpowder Plot, was discovered in the cellar of the Houses of Parliament on 5 November 1604. The plot, which aimed to assassinate King James I and his government, was foiled when Lord Monteagle received an anonymous warning letter and alerted the authorities. In the image, Monteagle (left) and Theophilus Howard, Earl of Suffolk (right), are shown entering the cellar and discovering Fawkes guarding a large cache of gunpowder. The engraving, created by John Leech from an illustration in Gilbert Abbott A Becketts Comic History of England, published by Bradbury, Agnew & Co. in London in 1880, offers a humorous take on the event. The caricatured figures of Monteagle and Suffolk are shown with exaggerated expressions of surprise and disbelief, while Fawkes is portrayed as a comical, mustachioed figure with a bauble in his hand. The image also includes depictions of Oliver Cromwell, who would later lead the English Civil War and the dissolution of the Long Parliament in 1653, as well as soldiers from both the Roundheads and Cavaliers. The discovery of Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot marked a significant turning point in English history and is still commemorated annually with the tradition of burning effigies of Fawkes on Bonfire Night.
