EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the sleek and powerful form of a Hawker Hunter T.7 XL618, registration number 87, of the Royal Air Force (RAF), as it taxis on the runway at RAF Chivenor on 22 August 1970. The Hawker Hunter, a British single-engine jet fighter and interceptor aircraft, was introduced into service with the RAF in 1954 and served until the late 1990s. This particular aircraft was part of 229 Operational Conversion Unit, which was responsible for training RAF pilots on the Hunter and other types of aircraft. The Hawker Hunter T.7, a variant of the Hunter series, was primarily used for advanced training and weapons practice. Its distinctive red and white checkerboard markings, which can be seen clearly in this image, identified it as belonging to the RAF. With its wings swept back at a sharp angle, the Hunter's aerodynamic design made it a formidable aircraft in the skies. Its powerful Rolls-Royce Avon RA.14 engine gave it a top speed of over 700 miles per hour, making it one of the fastest aircraft in the world at the time. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past of aviation history, showcasing the elegance and power of the Hawker Hunter T.7 as it prepared for takeoff at RAF Chivenor. The image is a reminder of the important role that the RAF and its pilots played in the development and operation of advanced aircraft during the mid-20th century.
