EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Head of the Violet Turaco, Musophaga violacea, also known as the Violet Plantain Eater or the Red-necked Turaco. The image was created by William Lizars, based on an illustration by the renowned naturalist and artist, William John Swainson, for his seminal work, "Birds of Western Africa," published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ornithology in 1837. The Violet Turaco is a native of West and Central Africa, and is easily identified by its vibrant, iridescent purple plumage, with a distinctive red neck and chest. The bird's head is adorned with a prominent crest, and its beak is curved and hooked, resembling that of a falcon or a chicquera (Ruficollis ruficollis), a rufous-collared hawk that is a common predator of turacos in their native habitat. The Violet Turaco is a frugivorous bird, feeding primarily on ripe fruit, especially figs and plantains. They are social birds, living in groups of up to 20 individuals, and are known for their distinctive call, which sounds like a loud, ringing bell. This beautiful engraving captures the essence of the Violet Turaco's striking appearance and unique characteristics, making it a treasured addition to any natural history collection.
