EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored lithograph captures a tender moment between Helene-Louise-Elisabeth of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Duchess of Orleans, and her young son, Philippe, Count of Paris, in 1852. The Duchess, dressed in an elegant Victorian gown with a high collar and long sleeves, cradles her son in her arms, gazing into his eyes with a loving expression. Philippe, wearing a frilly white shirt and a matching cap, reaches up towards his mother's face, creating a heartwarming connection between them. Helene-Louise-Elisabeth was born in 1814 in Germany as a member of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin royal family. In 1839, she married Philippe, the future King of France, who was the grandson of Napoleon Bonaparte. The couple had five children together, and Helene-Louise-Elisabeth served as the regent of France during her husband's absence in Algeria. This image is taken from Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France," a popular series of historical costumes published in Paris in 1852. The series was produced by the Administration de Librairie and is known for its high-quality lithographs that capture the fashion and style of various historical periods. The hand-coloring adds a richness and depth to the image, making it a beautiful and intriguing piece of historical art.
