EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Verico for Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World" published in Florence, Italy, in 1844, offers a fascinating glimpse into the armoury of the 14th century. The image showcases a variety of helmets and armour pieces that were essential components of chivalric attire during this era, when the ideals of romance and knighthood reached their zenith. At the forefront of the image is a conical helm (1), characterized by its tall, tapering shape, which offered excellent protection for the head and neck. Nearby, a trellis helm (2) is depicted, featuring a latticework design that allowed for improved peripheral vision. A round helm (3) is also illustrated, which offered all-around protection, while a frogmouth helm with visor (4) boasts a distinctive, angular visor designed to deflect blows. The armour pieces include a breastplate with lance rest (6), which was worn to protect the chest and torso during jousting tournaments. The knight is also depicted wearing chainmail (5) and a surcoat, which provided additional coverage and allowed for the display of heraldic emblems. This intricately detailed illustration offers a captivating glimpse into the world of medieval chivalry, where honour, valor, and the thrill of the joust reigned supreme.
