EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Herald of the Rhineland and Pfalz Bavaria, an important figure in the heraldic tradition of the Rhineland and Pfalz region in Germany. The herald is dressed in an armorial tunic, proudly displaying the symbols of both the Palatine lion of Pfalz and the silver and blue lozenges of Bavaria. The Palatine lion, a powerful symbol of the House of Wittelsbach, is prominently displayed on the left sleeve and chest of the tunic. The lozenges of Bavaria, symbolizing the House of Wittelsbach's rule over the Duchy of Bavaria, are represented on the right sleeve. The Herald of the Rhineland and Pfalz Bavaria was an essential figure in the ceremonial proceedings of the Koeniglich Bayerischen Haus-Ritter-Ordens vom heiligen Georg (Royal Bavarian House Equestrian Order of Saint George), an order founded in 1408 to promote chivalry and honor. The herald's role was to announce the arrival of the order's knights and to ensure that the correct heraldic insignia were displayed during the ceremonies. This beautiful chromolithograph is from the collection of Otto Watzelberger, who was the Secretary of the Koeniglich Bayerischen Haus-Ritter-Ordens vom heiligen Georg at the time. The image is taken from his publication, Beitraege zum Formenschatz der Heraldik (Contributions to the Vocabulary of Heraldry), published by Theodor Ackermann in Munich in 1900. The meticulous attention to detail and vibrant colors of the chromolithograph make it an essential addition to any heraldic collection.
