Herr Julius Seeth and his lions in a car, London Hippodrome

Herr Julius Seeth of the London Hippodrome, taking his forest-bred lions for a trip on a Daimler motor car while performing there in 1903. The Tatler reports how one lion, Abdullah, took big mouthfuls out of the wheels, another, Menelik, took most kindly and with imperial dignity to motoring (presumably hes the one standing in the wagon) and another sat on a wing board which promptly collapsed. Note the silver grille around the Hippodromes arena, which was raised by hydraulic rams to protect the audience during performances involving wild animals. Date: 1903

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Herr Julius Seeth, the renowned animal trainer and proprietor of the London Hippodrome, is seen taking his forest-bred lions for an extraordinary adventure in a Daimler motor car during his performance in 1903. The image, published in The Tatler, depicts Herr Seeth at the wheel, with one of his lions, Abdullah, taking a playful bite out of the wheels, while another, Menelik, sits regally in the back seat, exhibiting an air of imperial dignity. A third lion, perhaps overeager or misplaced, is seen perched precariously on a wing board that has just collapsed. The London Hippodrome, a popular entertainment venue and theatre located in Leicester Square, was renowned for its daring and thrilling animal acts. To ensure the safety of the audience during such performances, the Hippodrome featured a distinctive silver grille around its arena, which was raised by hydraulic rams to create a barrier between the audience and the wild animals. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the thrilling world of turn-of-the-century entertainment, where the boundary between man and beast was blurred, and the allure of the exotic and the wild held a powerful allure for audiences. The image captures the spirit of adventure, danger, and excitement that defined the era, as well as the remarkable bond between Herr Julius Seeth and his lions.
