EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Hiller YH-32 Hornet, registration number 55-4963 (msn 7), at an air display on a United States Naval Air Station in 1956. The distinctive helicopter, built by Hiller Aircraft in the early 1950s, is recognized by its single-bladed tail-rotor and the hand-held starting engine lying next to it. The Hiller YH-32 Hornet, also known as the HJ-1 Hornet in company designation, was a groundbreaking ultralight helicopter, powered by two Hiller 8RJ2B ramjet engines mounted on the rotor blade tips. Each engine weighed only 13lbs but delivered an equivalent of 45 h.p., totaling 90 h.p. This innovative design was built for both the United States Army and Navy in the mid-1950s. The YH-32 Hornet was a small and unique aircraft, with its ramjet engines offering a significant power boost compared to conventional helicopter engines of the time. This photograph captures a moment in aviation history, showcasing the cutting-edge technology of the Hiller YH-32 Hornet during an air display at a US Naval Air Station.
