EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving is a beautiful depiction of the Himber tree, scientifically known as Rajania cordata, from the Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), with engraving by Massard. Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and accurate representation of his subjects. The Himber tree is a marine angiosperm, also known as Rajania en coeur or Raiane heart-shaped, which grows in the Indo-Pacific region. The tree is shown here with its distinctive heart-shaped leaves and angular trunk, surrounded by various marine organisms, including the fiddler crab (Gelasimus di Marion), the angular goneplax (Gonoplax angularis), and the rhomboid gonoplax (Gonoplax rhomboides). The crabs are shown in their natural habitat, adding to the overall beauty and intrigue of the illustration. Turpin's illustration showcases the exquisite detail and artistry of botanical illustration during the 19th century. The use of handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history. This engraving is a testament to the importance of documenting and preserving the natural world through art and science.
