EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving, taken from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History) by Charles d'Orbigny, published in Paris in 1849, showcases two distinct and captivating European songbirds: the Hodgson's Redstart (Phoenicurus hodgsoni) and the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula). The Hodgson's Redstart, named after the British naturalist Brian Hodgson, is a small, agile bird with a distinctive red tail that it displays prominently during courtship and territorial displays. The male is adorned with a black mask, a red forehead, and a chestnut-red underbelly, while the female sports a more subdued appearance with a brown back and a reddish-brown underbelly. The European Robin, also known as the Redbreast or the Robin Redbreast, is a common and beloved bird across Europe. This small, plump bird is characterized by its bright red breast, which contrasts sharply with its gray-brown upperparts. The European Robin is an omnivorous bird, feeding on a variety of insects, worms, fruits, and berries. The illustration for this print was created by the skilled artist Edouard Travies, while the engraving was expertly executed by the Widow Fournier. The intricate details of the birds' plumage, along with their naturalistic poses, are a testament to the artists' mastery of their craft. This beautiful print offers a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating birds and serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity that exists within our world.
