EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving, Holy Roman Emperor Louis II, also known as Ludovicus II or Charles the Calm, is depicted in regal attire, symbolizing his dual roles as King of Italy and co-emperor with Lothair I. Born in 825 in West Francia, Louis II was a key figure of the Carolingian dynasty, which ruled during the Middle Ages. Louis II's classical portrait, inspired by the ancient Roman Caesars and Germanic traditions, showcases his strong and resolute demeanor. He is shown wearing a crown adorned with precious gems and a long, flowing robe, with a scepter in one hand and an orb in the other. The inscription at the bottom of the engraving, "IMP. LUD. II. ROM. GER. ET ITAL. CAES. AVG.," translates to "Emperor Louis II, Roman, German, and Italian Caesar and Augustus." This engraving is taken from the comprehensive work "De Roomsche Monarchy, The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697 by Francois Salma. Abraham Bogaerts, a renowned engraver, created the copperplate for this publication. The image provides a valuable historical record of the appearance and significance of Holy Roman Emperor Louis II during the late medieval period. Louis II's reign was marked by a delicate balance of power in Europe, as he navigated the complex political landscape of the Carolingian Empire and its neighboring territories. This portrait serves as a testament to his strength, authority, and enduring legacy.
