EDITORS COMMENTS
Great image of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, also known as Maximilian I, Maximilianus Austriacus, or Carolus V in some sources, depicted in this stunning 17th-century copperplate engraving from "The Roman Monarchy" by Francois Salma, published in Utrecht in 1697. Maximilian I (1459-1519) was a significant figure in European history, ruling various territories including the Habsburg lands in Austria, Bohemia, and Hungary, as well as Spain and its territories in Italy, the Netherlands, and Aragon. Maximilian I is shown here in a classical, imperial pose, wearing the imperial crown and holding a scepter and orb. The background features the symbols of the Roman and Austrian empires, as well as the Caesars and Kaisers, emphasizing his claim to the legacy of the ancient Roman emperors. The engraving is by Abraham Bogaert, a renowned engraver of the time, and is a testament to the artistic and political sophistication of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Maximilian I was a key figure in the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era, and his reign saw significant developments in art, literature, and politics. He was also an accomplished military leader, leading campaigns against the Ottoman Turks and other enemies. This image captures the grandeur and power of the Holy Roman Emperor, a symbol of the complex and dynamic political landscape of early modern Europe.
