EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Hop Goodenia, or Goodenia ovata, a native Australian plant. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Goodenia ovata, also known as Hop Goodenia, is a small herbaceous plant with ovate leaves and terminal racemes of pink or white flowers. The plant is native to the coastal areas of New South Wales and Victoria in Australia. The illustration accurately depicts the plant's delicate pennatula-shaped leaves, which are arranged in a rosette at the base and along the stem. The plant is also shown with its characteristic Cynomorium-like root system, which is covered in a grayish, grisette layer. The illustration was produced using the stipple engraving technique, which involves the application of small dots of ink to create shading and texture. The intricate detail and precise shading in this illustration are a testament to the skill and artistry of Turpin and the engraver, Massard. The illustration also includes the Latin names of various plant parts, such as "penna" for the leaf shape, "pteroeides" for the leaf base, and "griseum" for the grayish root layer. This beautiful illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of Goodenia ovata and the botanical knowledge of the time. It is a valuable addition to any collection of botanical art and a testament to the skill and artistry of Turpin and the team at Batelli e Figli who produced it.
