The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Goodenia ovata, also known as Hop Goodenia, is a small herbaceous plant with ovate leaves and terminal racemes of pink or white flowers. The plant is native to the coastal areas of New South Wales and Victoria in Australia. The illustration accurately depicts the plant's delicate pennatula-shaped leaves, which are arranged in a rosette at the base and along the stem.
