The handcuffs with which the Daily Mirror challenged Harry Houdini at the London Hippodrome in March 1904. The cuff was allegedly made by a Birmingham blacksmith, Nathaniel Hart, who had spent five years perfecting its locks. On 17 March, Houdini, the so-called Handcuff King, was manacled into the cuffs and took over an hour to escape in front of a packed theatre. There are various conspiracy theories about how Houdini managed the escape and it is possible he and the Mirror colluded together. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the iconic handcuffs used in the legendary challenge between Harry Houdini and the Daily Mirror at the London Hippodrome in March 1904. The handcuffs, which are shown in the image, were allegedly crafted by Birmingham blacksmith Nathaniel Hart, who spent an impressive five years perfecting their intricate locks. Houdini, known as the Handcuff King, accepted the Daily Mirror's challenge to escape from these seemingly unbreakable restraints in front of a packed theatre. The escapologist, who was renowned for his ability to free himself from the most secure restraints, took over an hour to accomplish the feat, leaving the audience in awe. The handcuffs, which were described as heavy and strong, became a symbol of Houdini's extraordinary skills and the power of illusion. However, there are various conspiracy theories surrounding Houdini's escape, with some suggesting that he colluded with the Daily Mirror to make the challenge appear more impressive. Despite the controversy, the event remains a significant moment in the history of escapology and entertainment. This photograph is a reminder of the enduring fascination with the impossible and the human ability to defy the odds.
