EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, created in 1890, showcases a harmonious encounter between two beloved North American birds: the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) and the Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis). The House Sparrow, depicted in the center, is a non-native species that was introduced to the Americas from Europe in the late 19th century. The male House Sparrow is easily identified by his distinctive black, brown, and chestnut plumage, with a prominent brown cap and a white cheek patch. The female, on the other hand, has a more subdued color palette, with a gray-brown back, a pale gray belly, and a brown cap with a faint stripe. Surrounding the House Sparrow are four Dark-eyed Juncos, a native bird species commonly known as "snowbirds" due to their migratory habits. The three males are shown in their distinctive winter plumage, with a gray-brown back, a white belly, and a black hood extending down to their necks. The female Juncos, displayed on the left and right, have a similar coloration but with a more muted gray-brown back and a paler belly. This beautiful illustration is a chromolithograph, a color printing technique that was popular during the 19th century. It was created as part of Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania, published by E.K. Mayer in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The original ornithological illustration was produced by the renowned naturalist and artist, John James Audubon. This image offers a glimpse into the rich natural history of North America during the late 1800s.
