Ice-cutting on the Hudson River 1875

General view of gathering of ice at the Hudson River, hundred miles above the city of New York. Work was commenced during the winter months, when the thickness of nine inches was reached, at various convenient points along the banks of the river were plowmen with plows of deeper blade sink the groove to depth of three inches and continue this operation until a sufficient depth is attained, just enough ice is left to hold the blocks firmly together. The next operation is to separate a raft of the blocks by taps of the heavy ice chisel.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1875, offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of ice-cutting on the Hudson River during the late 19th century. The scene unfolds approximately hundred miles north of New York City, where the river's surface transforms into a vast expanse of frozen beauty. As winter's icy grip tightens, the ice begins to thicken, reaching a depth of nine inches. At strategic locations along the riverbanks, plowmen wielding plows with deeper blades carefully sink grooves to a depth of three inches. This process is repeated until the ice reaches a sufficient thickness to securely hold the blocks together. The next phase of the labor-intensive process involves separating the ice blocks from one another. With the aid of heavy ice chisels, the workers skillfully tap away at the frozen surface, methodically breaking the ice into manageable rafts. The horses, harnessed to the plows and other equipment, provide the necessary power to transport the harvested ice to various destinations. The ice-cutting industry was a vital part of American life during the 1870s. Harvested ice was used to preserve perishable food items, ensuring a consistent food supply throughout the year. The image captures the dedication and hard work of the laborers, who braved the harsh winter conditions to bring this essential resource to communities. This photograph is a captivating testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people who lived and worked during the 19th century. The frozen Hudson River serves as a backdrop to their industrious efforts, creating a scene that is both beautiful and awe-inspiring.
