EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate print depicts a lively scene from the Jhulan Yatra ceremony in India, featuring a group of balak dancers and musicians. The image, drawn and engraved by Andrea Bernieri after Francois Solvyns, is taken from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy, in 1844. The Jhulan Yatra is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated in honor of Lord Krishna, where images of the deity are carried in procession on a swing. Balak dancers, young boys dressed as Krishna, are an integral part of this celebration. They dance and sing, often accompanied by musicians, to entertain the crowd and invoke the blessings of the god. In this illustration, we see several balak dancers in vibrant costumes, their faces painted with intricate designs, as they perform graceful movements in unison. Musicians, including a tabla player and a flute player, accompany them, their instruments adding to the festive atmosphere. The handcolouring adds depth and richness to the print, making the scene come alive with vibrant hues. This beautiful illustration offers a glimpse into the rich cultural traditions of India during the 19th century, providing a window into the past and showcasing the beauty and diversity of the subcontinent's art and heritage.
