EDITORS COMMENTS
Isabella Stewart, also known as Isabel of Scotland, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Georges Jacques Gatine after an illustration by Louis Marie Lante for the Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres in Paris, 1827. Isabella is shown wearing the richly adorned armorial robe of Scotland and Brittany. The robe features the coat of arms of Scotland, which displays the bold red lion rampant with a double tressure, and the coat of arms of Brittany, represented by the ermine. Isabella's regal attire is further enhanced by a crown, a gold necklace, and an ermine-trimmed surtout. Isabella was the second wife of Francis I, Duke of Brittany, also known as François, Duke of Brittany. She was born in Scotland around 1476 and was the daughter of James III, King of Scotland. In 1494, Isabella married Francis I, Duke of Brittany, who was a significant political figure in Europe at the time. The marriage was a strategic alliance, as Francis sought to strengthen his position in Europe, and Isabella brought a valuable dowry to the union. The couple had four children together. Isabella's marriage to Francis I, Duke of Brittany, marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life, and this elegant portrait captures the grace and beauty of the Scottish princess in her new role as the Duchess of Brittany. The intricate details of her clothing and the rich colors of the engraving serve as a testament to the artistic skill of the time and the grandeur of the European courts.
