EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisite hand-colored lithograph, we behold the enchanting likeness of Isabelle of Portugal, Duchess of Burgundy (1428-1472). Born in Portugal as Princess Isabel of Coimbra, she was the third wife of Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy (1419-1467). The image is a faithful rendition of a miniature from the Chroniques de Monstrelet manuscript, housed in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Isabelle's regal attire is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the Burgundian court. She wears a richly embroidered robe, adorned with intricate floral motifs and golden threads, reflecting the artistic brilliance of the era. The voluminous sleeves, adorned with ruffles and fur cuffs, add to her regal elegance. A jeweled headdress, embellished with pearls and precious stones, completes her resplendent appearance. Isabelle's marriage to Philippe le Bon in 1440 was a strategic alliance between Portugal and Burgundy, aimed at strengthening their political and economic ties. Despite the political motives behind their union, the couple shared a deep bond, and Isabelle played a significant role in the Burgundian court. She was known for her intelligence, piety, and diplomatic skills, which helped maintain peace and stability in the duchy during her husband's reign. This stunning lithograph, produced by Leopold Massard in 1852 for the portfolio "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, offers a captivating glimpse into the past, transporting us to the opulent world of the Burgundian court and the enchanting presence of Isabelle of Portugal, Duchess of Burgundy.
