Jean Baptiste Budes, Comte de Guebriant (1602-1643): A Portrait of Power and Nobility This stunning handcoloured lithograph captures the likeness of Jean Baptiste Budes, Comte de Guebriant, a prominent figure in French history as Marshal of France during the reign of King Louis XIII. The portrait, taken from Roger de Gaignières gallery portfolio X in Le Bibliophile Jacob's Costumes Historiques de la France, showcases the Comte de Guebriant's regal presence and military prowess. Born in 1602, Jean Baptiste Budes began his military career at a young age, serving under the command of Marshal Anne de Montmorency. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning the favor of King Louis XIII and becoming Marshal of France in 1636. His military successes, particularly during the Thirty Years' War, solidified his reputation as a formidable military leader. The Comte de Guebriant's attire in this portrait reflects his high rank and status. He wears a richly embroidered doublet, adorned with gold lace and intricate designs, over a white shirt with lace cuffs. His breeches are also decorated with gold lace, and he wears a black velvet cloak with a fur lining and a plume of feathers on his hat. The portrait's vibrant colors and meticulous details bring the Comte de Guebriant's regal persona to life, transporting us back to the opulent courts of 17th-century France.
